About the Business
Photos from the family album: Walkers Builders yard and stores in Little Shelford (above) photographed during the 1950s. Working on a house in Cambridge in the 1950s (right) in the days before Health & Safety Regulations! Walkers Builders Ltd was established in 1871 by our great grandfather, Edward Walker, a master carpenter, who worked from Little Shelford. Edward's three sons followed him into the business, working from the same premises that we occupy today.
One of Edward's sons, Harold, had two sons of his own, Brien and Percy, who developed and expanded the business during the 1950s, carrying out many of the new housing developments in Cambridge and the surrounding areas. Today, Walkers Builders is run by Graham and Mervyn Walker (left and right below) who were both required to serve apprenticeships before being admitted to the family firm.
